Action Scénique
They are from France/Finland and got to know each other at P.A.R.T.S., the dance school of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. As many young choreographers tend to do, they remained in Brussels after their education. Apart from their participation in national and international projects by other artists, all three of them immediately started to develop their own work in wp Zimmer, a workplace for dance in Antwerp. The artistic ties among them got stronger: they became each other’s dramaturg, light designer, artistic advisor and partner in crime. A shared artistic stance, a shared way of developing material, shared thoughts on dance and performance unavoidably led to the creation of their own company: Action Scénique.
Azione Scenica, a term from the world of opera, was used for the first time by Luigi Lamberti in the 18th century. With this term he expressed a rupture with the traditional opera of that time: away from the narrative and illusional drama and back to the here and now of the stage.
They are Claire Croizé, Nada Gambier and Etienne Guilloteau. They take their creed seriously: they act on the stage, in the here and the now, for the spectator. No narrative, overdeveloped, aesthetic end product to be easily consumed. They pick their means (be it theatre, dance, light, music or photography) and share their research that hovers between theatricality and physicality, between reality and fiction. The spectator is invited to search along with them. And to find.
